Description
The giraffe, unlike most animals, is born with horns intact, although they are folded onto the skull to ease their passage during birth.
These horns, called ossicones, are not truly horns, but are made of bone and covered with skin and hair.
Unlike the antlers of deer, the ossicones are never shed.
Recognized the world over by their long necks, long legs and distinctive coloration, male giraffes can stand over 18 feet tall and weigh over 4200 pounds.
They lack tear ducts, so they clean their eyeballs with their 20-inch tongue, a nimble, versatile organ which serves as an extendable finger that they also use to pick only the choicest of leaves from the tallest trees.
Their luxuriously long eyelashes serve to keep their eyes free of insects and debris. Their long sensitive ears are held erect and can pivot independently to locate sound.
Like its cousin, the okapi, the giraffe can get by on ten minutes to two hours sleep daily.
Did you know that there are extensive records of giraffes engaging in osteophagia, or bone eating?
When you're that tall a little extra calcium comes in particularly handy, but lots of other animals engage in osteophagia on occasion.
Bones are a rich source of phosphorus as well as calcium, and animals don't always fit into the neat carnivore, herbivore, omnivore categories we learn at school.
