Description
The bald eagle is used to represent the United States of America at a national level. It has become synonymous with the ideas of American might and freedom.
The eagle is used on the lectern for whenever the President delivers an important address, and on the flags of the Vice-President and the Secretary of State (amongst many other cabinet-level flags). In addition, the front of all American passports bear the eagle.
The bald eagle and the American Flag have been the symbol of freedom and synonymous with the United States of America since the bald eagle was chosen June 20, 1782 as the emblem of the United States of American, because of its long life, great strength and majestic looks, and also because it was then believed to exist only on this continent.
The bald eagle, our national symbol, is listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act in 43 of the lower 48 states and listed as threatened in Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin.
There are about 40,000 bald eagles in Alaska and none in Hawaii. However, bald eagles have improved greatly in numbers, productivity, and security in recent years.
The flag of the United States is one of the nation's most widely recognized symbols. Within the United States, flags are frequently displayed not only on public buildings but on private residences.
The flag is a common motif on decals for car windows, and clothing ornaments such as badges and lapel pins.
Throughout the world the flag has been used in public discourse to refer to the United States.
The man credited with designing the current 50 star American flag is Robert G. Heft. He was 17 years old at the time and did the flag design as a high school class project while living with his grandparents in Ohio.
