Description
"Bethlehem Baptist Church Ruins" The historical marker at the front of the property tells that its congregation was originally formed in 1837, and that the church was erected later that same year on the Brunswick-Easton Turnpike, which is now modern-day Route 78.
This was the main image of the "Bethlehem Baptist Church Ruins" series and a grand look at a part of the historical remains of a forgotten time gone by.
Despite the massive amount of damage by man and time, this old structure had endured many hardships of surviving the elements.
The copper piping had been stolen by the scavengers leaving numerous holes allowed water easy entry to the wooden roof and interior walls.
Eventually to leading it for the extreme water damage which led to the collapse of the roof, and caving-in on the church's interior walls as it fell in upon them and then sometime later its remains were set aflame by arson.
The Congregation was formed in 1837. This stucco over stone building was built in 1858.
So many members transferred out of this church to ones nearer their homes in Cherryville, Clinton and Lebanon that the congregation was depleted and the building abandoned in 1906.
Although the roof collapsed long ago, the four walls are still remarkably intact.
Some folks in this community see it as a safety hazard and would like to see the building torn down, so I look at this old landmark as just a matter of time before its gone completely as another lost artifact of mankind, or man-unkind.
Though the church itself is abandoned, the graveyard is thankfully maintained by the Van Sycle-Manner Family.

Wonderful capture. The tree in the middle reminds me of a tradition some do when a loved one dies, they plant a tree in their memory. Its as if this tree is a growing memorial of those who once gathered there. A beautiful site.
