Description
A boat trip deep into the canals of Tortuguero Costa Rica was as interesting as it was beautiful.
The word Tortuguero, can be translated as Land of Turtles, is a village on the Northern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica in the Limon Province.
It gave its nickname to the neighboring Tortuguero National Park where the town is situated on a sand bar island, separated from the mainland by the Tortuguero River and bordering the Caribbean Sea.
Tortuguero is legendary for its negotiable canals that flow through the rainforest where this image was taken and has such earned the nickname of "Central America's Amazon".
This was a trip of a life time and not many eyes have ever gazed upon the rivers and canals in this wonderful "Caribbean Rainforest".
Not many folks ever will either, because this is way up the river's canals where very little English is even used.
The Tortuguero National Park has over 20 miles of coastline, which provides sea turtles a protected place to lay their eggs.
Tortuguero is bordered on the north by the Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge (with habitats and climate similar to Tortuguero), to the south by the mouth of the Parismina River and the Cariari National Wetlands, the town of Tortuguero at the mouth of the Tortuguero River, and the Dr. Archie Carr Wildlife Refuge, which is a biological station to carry out turtle tagging program run by the Caribbean Conservation Corporation (Now known was the Sea Turtle Conservancy).
The beaches more or less the key nesting sites for four species of sea turtle, including two critically endangered species.
The National Park is also host to an incredible biodiversity of insects, resident and migratory birds, and mammals, plus jaguar and four species of monkey.
The small village, which can be reached only by boat or airplane, is sustained almost wholeheartedly by eco-tourism.
If you are reading this, you have found a very rare photo few american eyes have ever seen.
