Description
"Yucatan Bird Of Prey" was taken in Cancun Mexico as I wondered along the shore line off the Yucatán Peninsula which separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean Sea.
This is the Great Egret, generally a very successful species with a large and expanding range distributed across most of the tropical and warmer temperate regions.
Like all egrets, it's a member of the heron family, "Ardeidae," a beautiful looking species and amazing bird of prey, which thrilled me to the bone during this image capture.
The great egret feeds in shallow water or drier habitats, feeding mainly on fish, frogs, small mammals, and occasionally small reptiles and insects, spearing them with its long, sharp bill most of the time by standing still and allowing the prey to come within its striking distance of its bill which it uses as a spear.
It will often wait motionless for prey, or slowly stalk its victim, however, this great egret was watching me stalk him as he side stepped around until he had enough of me before flying off to a nearby rocky area that I was unable to get to.
He was busy hunting for his morning breakfast as I tried to move in for the shot. What a beautiful “Free Bird image.
