The Bethlehem Baptist Church building was built in 1858 and abandoned in 1906 due to dwindling membership.
Little additional information is to be found on this church, as I did learn some of history from a local man while at the scene.
I was told that the church remained empty and unsupervised for several years in a state of disuse and in the 1950’s, people managed to climb up and steal the copper drainpipes that ran across its roof.
Not only did they steal the piping, they also stole away any chance this old structure had of surviving the elements.
Numerous holes were left behind where the scavengers tore away the piping, allowed water easy entry to the wooden roof and interior walls.
Eventually the water damage led to the collapse of the roof, and caving-in of the church's interior walls as it fell in upon them.
To add insult to injury to this broken church sometime later, when its remains were set aflame by arson.
